The Impact of Air Quality on the Respiratory Health of Healthy Individuals
Introduction: Residents of large cities are highly exposed to particles of pollutants that negatively influence body systems, primarily cardiorespiratory. On the other hand, it is observed that residents of coastal areas enjoy greater contact with nature, as well as a cleaner environment. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the influence of different concentrations of air pollutants on respiratory health. Methodology: The study sample consisted of 100 adult men, aged 40 and over, who were divided into 2 groups according to their region of residence: Residents of Greater São Paulo, Group 1 and residents of Baixada Santista, Group 2. All patients underwent cardiorespiratory testing to determine the level of physical conditioning (VO2max) and the variables: Pulmonary ventilation (LV) and ventilatory oxygen equivalent (VE/VO2). The data were presented as mean ± standard deviation. The STATISTIC 9.0 program was used for the analyzes and the test applied was one-way variance for comparing respiratory data between groups. Values of p <0.05 considered statistically significant. Results: The groups were similar in peak oxygen consumption: Group 1 = 17.0±0.04 ml /kg/min and Group 2, 18.3±0.08 ml/kg/min. Group1 presented altered ventilatory responses during the cardiorespiratory test when compared to Group 2: (VE=80±0.3 ml and VE = 70±0.2 ml, p=0.004), (VE/VCO2=35.7±0,3 units and VE/VCO2 = 31.7±0.1 units, p=0.003) and (V/VO2 = 36.5±0.2 units and V/VO2=31.6±0.1 units, p =0.03. Conclusion: We can conclude that individuals living in the greater São Paulo have decreased respiratory efficiency when compared to residents of the coastal region during maximal stress testing.
