Use of Bacteria for Advanced Oil Recovery
Abstract: Current oil exploration technologies allow the average removal of only 1/3 of the oil present in reservoirs. It is estimated that, in the underground of the United States alone, 300 billion barrels of oil were left unexplored. Advanced bacterial recovery techniques are suppressed or ignored in exploration projects because of inconclusive results, which create uncertainty about their safety. However, these represent an ecologically correct and sustainable alternative for avoiding the contamination of the environment with chemical agents used in other methods. Understanding the microbial activity is currently a challenge for modern science due to the difficulty in elucidating the physical-chemical and nutritional conditions required by the culture in its development, in addition to genetic and biomolecular mechanisms of syntrophy. The objective of this work is to characterize and identify bacterial cultures increasing the understanding of microbial interactions in contact with oil under reservoir conditions in order to increase the oil recovery factor.
