Retinopathy in Prematurity Associated with Prolonged Oxygen Therapy
Abstract: Retinopathy in prematurity (ROP) is the abnormal growth of fibroblastic tissue and blood vessels juxtaposed posteriorly to the lens, oxygen therapy used in premature infants in the intensive care unit contributes to the development of the disease. Objective: to analyze the influence of prolonged oxygen therapy on ROP. Material and methods: bibliographic survey on the influence of prolonged oxygen therapy on ROP, selected 9 articles for the production of the study. Conclusion: ROP is one of the causes of blindness in the world in premature neonates, and arterial oxygen levels interfere with the retinal vascular formation of the newborn, emphasis on cases of hyperoxia, causing injury to the already formed vessels, suppressing the production of vascular endothelial growth factor.
